CHRISTENINGS, BAPTISMS AND THANKSGIVING FOR CHILDBIRTH |
| We are very happy to receive requests for the christening or baptism of your child. These Services can be held either within one of our normal 10am Sunday Services, or at a particular time on say a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If the Service is outside of a normal Service then it lasts about 25 minutes. We make use of our splendid nineteenth century font, located near the western entrance to the church. We are also glad to receive enquiries from those seeking to be baptised as young people or adults. People can be baptised at any age - Jesus himself was about 30 when John the Baptist baptised him in the River Jordan! We can conduct the Service either in church, using the font, or nearby in the sea! Most baptisms in the past were by 'full immersion', so this follows ancient practice! |

We do not make stipulations at St.Michael's about regularity of attendance at our Services. But we do expect that parents and Godparents are Christians, professing a living faith in God revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The declarations which are made on behalf of the child in the Service do reflect Christian faith as well as values. We also can conduct Thanksgivings for Childbirth - this is a very nice Service which can sometimes suit those who might find it hard to make the strong declarations of the Baptism Service. |

We are able to christen children where parents do not live in the parish of Lyme Regis. But this requires the goodwill of the Vicar of the Parish in which you currently reside - provided in the ideal through a letter from him or her. This shouldn't be difficult to obtain. No charge is made for a christening or baptism, unless you want to employ an organist for some hymns. However we do ask for a generous donation as a "Thank You" for the considerable costs of mounting this Service: clergy & verger's time, and a gift towards the maintenance of the building. |
